Bathroom Regrouting in Sydney

Many bathrooms do not need renovating. They need the grout replaced.
The tiles are usually fine. It’s the grout between them that has darkened, cracked or washed out, and that’s what makes the whole bathroom look tired and allows water to get where it shouldn’t.
Here’s what the job actually involves.
Does your bathroom need regrouting?
Most of the time you can see what needs to be rectified.
The signs we get called out for:
What we look for:
- Dark lines that stay dark: you clean them, they look better for a fortnight, then they’re back.
- Powdery grout: run a fingernail along a joint and material comes away. Missing sections: a gap where grout used to be, usually in a corner or along the shower floor.
- Cracked grout lines: fine cracks running along a joint rather than across a tile. Silicone lifting: the bead in the corner or around the bath pulling away from the tile.
- A musty smell that won’t shift: something is staying wet behind the surface.
- A stain on the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom: that one isn’t cosmetic, and it’s worth calling someone promptly.
Any one of these on its own isn’t always cause for concern. Three or four together and the grout has reached the end of its life.
Why does bathroom grout fail?
Because most standard grout was never designed for a wet room. Cement grout is porous, it absorbs water every time the shower runs, holds it, and dries out slowly. Over years, that cycle breaks it down from the inside, and mould establishes itself in the pores where surface cleaning can’t reach. Normal movement in a house adds to it, and the joints crack.
This isn’t a sign of a bad installation job. It’s what cement grout does in a bathroom that gets used every day.
Why Homeowners Choose Our Regrouting Service
What does bathroom regrouting involve?
We remove the old grout and replace it with new, across the whole bathroom, not just the shower. That means the shower walls and floor, the bath surround, splashbacks, and floor tiles where needed. We cut out the failed grout, clean the joints thoroughly, and refill them. Silicone in the corners and around the bath gets replaced at the same time, since that’s typically where mould takes hold first.
The tiles stay where they are.
Can you regrout a bathroom without removing the tiles?
Yes, and that’s the point of it. Pulling tiles turns a two-day job into a three-week renovation, once they’re off, you’re into new waterproofing, new tiles, and a bathroom you can’t use in the meantime. Regrouting works entirely from the surface, so your bathroom stays accessible throughout.
Should you regrout the whole bathroom or just the shower?
Usually the shower is the priority. That’s where the water is, where grout fails first, and where a leak will actually cost you something. If the rest of the bathroom is looking tired but isn’t letting water through, you can address it at the same time or leave it for later. We’ll tell you what needs doing now and what can wait.
How long does bathroom regrouting take?
Most bathrooms are done in one to two days. A shower on its own is typically a day. A full bathroom including floors and splashbacks takes longer. Epoxy grout requires curing time before the room can be used again, and we’ll give you a specific timeframe on the day based on conditions rather than a generic estimate.

Will regrouting stop mould coming back?
In most cases, yes, and the results last far longer than cleaning ever does. Cement grout is porous, it absorbs water, and once mould is living inside it, no amount of scrubbing removes it permanently, which is why it returns a couple of weeks after cleaning. Epoxy grout doesn’t absorb water in the same way, so there’s nothing for mould to establish itself in.
Ventilation still matters. If the bathroom has no working exhaust fan, new grout will make a significant difference but won’t compensate for poor airflow on its own.
What grout do you use?
Epoxy on the floor in the wet areas. It costs more than cement grout and is harder to work with, which is why not every tradesperson uses it.
It also holds up in a bathroom that gets used hard every day, which cement grout doesn’t.
On the walls, we asses what is going to work best as epoxy grout is not always needed. For a full comparison: Epoxy vs Cement Grout
When regrouting isn’t the answer
Sometimes new grout won’t fix what’s wrong, and it’s worth knowing that before you book anyone. If water is coming from pipes, the drain or taps, that’s a plumbing issue. If the waterproofing membrane under the tiles has failed, the tiles do need to come up, that’s a waterproofer and tiler, and a different scope of work entirely. If the shower screen seals have perished, that’s a glazier.
We’d rather identify that during the quote than take the job and have you call us back in three months. We work alongside plumbers and glaziers and will point you in the right direction if the problem sits outside our scope.
What does bathroom regrouting cost?
It depends on the size of the bathroom, the size of your tiles and how much grout has failed. We quote on site at no charge, because quoting off a photo is how estimates end up changing on the day.
